Sustainable Halloween

Its Halloween this month! We here at Freida Mo’s love the spooky season but as advocates for slow fashion & sustainability we have some issues with the scariest element of Halloween…the waste!

Research suggests that 90% of families now buy costumes with an estimated 30 million of us dressing up!

The issue is we change our mind each year with who or what to dress up as leading to a lot of waste. Surveying costumes from 19 leading supermarkets and retailers, including notorious fast fashion brands such as Boohoo and PrettyLittleThing, the research found that 83% of the materials used were polluting oil-based plastic, likely to end up in landfill.

The most prevalent plastic polymer found was polyester, accounting for 63% of all analysed materials, which can take anywhere between 20 to 200 years to decompose.

Additionally, when decomposing, polyester and other synthetic plastic fibres release methane, a potent greenhouse gas, into the environment.

So we have devised our own sustainable Halloween line! All its taken is a little imagination from the Freidettes & we have been able to use our wonderful vintage items to go from day-to-day wear to costume attire, saving our pennies & our planet!
